To investigate the in vivo and in situ effect of different types of lasers in prevention of enamel demineralization in high caries risk cases (around orthodontic brackets, around restoration and in caries susceptible pits and fissures). PubMed was searched using the following keyword sequence; (Laser therapy OR laser irradiation OR laser application) AND (enamel caries prevention OR enamel demineralization OR enamel remineralization OR early enamel caries OR early-enamel caries OR enamel resistance OR enamel decalcification OR white spot lesions WSLs OR incipient lesion OR enamel decay OR enamel Dissolution OR enamel microhardness) AND (clinical trial OR Randomized clinical trial OR In situ study). The latest literature search was ended by "30 January 2023". PubMed was used as a primary data base for study selection. Scopus, EBSCO, and Google scholar are checked in our study after results of systematic search on PubMed. Only duplicates were found. Two meta-analyses were carried out. The first, clinical meta-analysis on incidence of white spot lesions (WSLs) following CO2 laser irradiation of enamel. The second meta-analysis on ex-vivo/in situ effect of CO2 laser on microhardness of enamel. In each meta-analysis three studies were included. Risk of bias was assessed. The search identified eight studies (four ex-vivo and four clinical trials). Regarding the clinical meta-analysis, the overall standardized mean difference was 0.21 [ 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.15-0.30, p < 0.00001]. This indicates that the incidence of new WSLs in patients who received low power CO2 laser treatment was highly significantly lower than placebo groups. The heterogeneity was considerable (I2 = 71%). In the second meta-analysis, the overall standardized mean difference was 49.55 [ 95% confidence interval (CI): 37.74, 61.37, p < 0.00001]. This indicates that microhardness of enamel receiving low power (0.4-5 W) CO2 laser irradiation is highly significantly lower than control untreated enamel. The heterogeneity was substantial (I2 = 48%). Within the limitations of this study, Low level laser therapy concept with CO2 laser seems to be effective in preventing enamel caries.Prospero registration number: CRD42023437379.

OBJECTIVES: Intraoral scanners (IOS) display disclosed plaque, and the scientific literature has reported that plaque levels can be monitored on intraoral scans using one IOS system (Dexis 3800; control IOS). This study aimed to investigate whether this is also possible with other IOS systems (i700, Primescan, Trios 5; test IOS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten participants (29.6 ± 5.5 years) were enrolled. After plaque accumulation and subsequent toothbrushing, intraoral scans were performed with the control IOS and the three test IOS. All scans were aligned and the vestibular/oral surfaces of the Ramfjord teeth (16, 21, 24, 36, 41, 44) were analysed with automated planimetry using a predefined threshold value. The proportion of pixels assigned to plaque-covered areas was expressed as a percentage of the total number of pixels (P%). We then assessed whether the planimetrically determined plaque-covered areas corresponded to those identified visually. This revealed that a threshold correction (P%corr) was required for approximately 20 % (i700 and Trios 5) to over 65 % (Primescan) of the images. RESULTS: Bland-Altman analysis showed no significant systematic bias and limits of agreement ranging from approximately -20 to +20 P% units, with a tendency towards lower values at higher plaque coverage. Manual correction improved the agreement and halved the limits of agreement. All test IOS could detect a reduction in plaque after brushing, as well as the typical site-dependant plaque distribution patterns. CONCLUSIONS: All test IOS appeared to be suitable for plaque monitoring. Planimetric methods must be adapted to the colour representation of the IOS. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Plaque monitoring using IOS opens a new field of application in preventive dentistry.

The passing of the years of life physiologically leads to the accumulation of changes in tissues in the oral cavity, influencing dentition, chewing and swallowing mechanisms, and the oral microbiota. Some diseases and medications can aggravate oral symptoms and negatively influence eating behaviours, increasing the likelihood of becoming malnourished. This could make older individuals more vulnerable to complications when undergoing major orthopaedic surgery. Hidden infection foci in the oral cavity are a recognised cause of post-operative periprosthetic joint infections. Dysfunctional oral problems might also compromise feeding after surgery when good nutrition represents a fundamental aspect of a proper recovery. To manage these shortcomings, in this article, the authors hypothesise a multidisciplinary path of care named the Integrated Oral Health Network applied to major Orthopaedic Surgery (IOHN-OS). This peri-operative initiative would include pre-operative oral health screening and risk management by a dental team, patient education programmes before and after surgery, and bedside gerodontology actions like oral care and meal and eating support for fragile individuals. The IOHN-OS has the potential to reshape the concept of suitability for major orthopaedic surgery and generate momentum for designing community-based surveillance programmes that can keep the mouths of older subjects healthy for a long time.

Children from diverse ethnic groups are at significantly increased risk for dental caries. In particular, American Indian (AI) children have the highest incidence of detal caries of any ethnic group. The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically restricted health care access, including preventive oral health care. Given this context, it is unclear whether or not preventive oral health care for AI children has resumed since lockdown. To address this question, we surveyed adult AI caregivers (N = 152) of children aged 0-5 years, assessing recent (12-month) and pre-COVID (for caregivers of children aged 3-5 years) preventive oral and medical health services. We also examined medical health care access and utilization among caregivers. Among children aged 3-5 years old, both pre-pandemic and past year medical care utilization were generally high (80 and 90%, respectively) as was any oral health care utilization (64 & 78%, respectively). Oral health check-ups were more common over the last year (62%) compared to pre-COVID (44%). Recent health care utilization among children 1-5 years old in this sample were generally comparable to national estimates, except for higher reported preventive medical care (99% vs. 87.6%, respectively) and higher preventive oral care (96% vs. 59.6%, respectively). More caregivers reported delaying or foregoing needed health care due to COVID (28-38%) versus due to cost (8-17%). In this survey of AI caregivers, recent child preventive health care utilization was high, and changes in utilization following the lockdown phases of the pandemic were comparable for oral and medical health care.

OBJECTIVES: A calcium phosphate extracted from fish bones (CaP-N) was evaluated for enamel remineralization and dentinal tubules occlusion. METHODS: CaP-N was characterized by assessing morphology by SEM, crystallinity by PXRD, and composition by ICP-OES. CaP-N morphology, crystallinity, ion release, and pH changes over time in neutral and acidic solutions were studied. CaP-N was then tested to assess remineralization and dentinal tubules occlusion on demineralized human enamel and dentin specimens (n = 6). Synthetic calcium phosphate in form of stoichiometric hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (CaP-S) and tap water were positive and negative controls, respectively. After treatment (brush every 12 h for 5d and storage in Dulbecco's modified PBS), specimens' morphology and surface composition were assessed (by SEM-EDS), while the viscoelastic behavior was evaluated with microindentation and DMA. RESULTS: CaP-N consisted of rounded microparticles (200 nm - 1 µm) composed of 33 wt% hydroxyapatite and 67 wt% ß-tricalcium phosphate. In acidic solution, CaP-N released calcium and phosphate ions thanks to the preferential ß-tricalcium phosphate phase dissolution. Enamel remineralization was induced by CaP-N comparably to CaP-S, while CaP-N exhibited a superior dentinal tubule occlusion than CaP-S, forming mineral plugs and depositing new nanoparticles onto demineralized collagen. This behavior was attributed to its bigger particle size and increased solubility. DMA depth profiling and SEM showed an excellent interaction between the newly formed mineralized structures and the pristine tissue, particularly at the exposed collagen fibrils. SIGNIFICANCE: CaP-N demonstrated very good remineralizing and occlusive activity in vitro, comparable to CaP-S, thus could be a promising circular economy alternative therapeutic agent for dentistry.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of a simulation-based flipped classroom in developing dental students' head and neck examination skills. METHODS: Second-year dental students (n = 118) participated in a simulation-based flipped classroom experience. A pre-class recorded lecture and video were posted online one week before the simulation date. In class, students completed a pre-quiz assessing pre-class coursework understanding of head and neck examination content. Then, students attended a question-and-answer session before the patient simulation. A formative assessment of head and neck examination simulation on a patient in the clinic was completed. Lastly, students completed an in-class post-quiz assessing understanding of head and neck examination content after the simulation, classroom simulation discussion, and open-response survey. RESULTS: Student post-quiz scores were significantly higher than pre-quiz scores, with an average improvement of 4.8 ± 7.2 percentage points. There was no difference between male and female improvement in scores. Student survey responses indicated that students liked combining simulation and flipped classroom methodology, flexibility with their schedules, learning at their pace, and opportunities for a deeper level of learning. Students reported wanting more practice sessions for their technical skills and more accessibility to faculty. CONCLUSIONS: According to this study's results, students had significantly higher post-quiz scores than pre-quiz scores and reported positive perceptions of this combined teaching technique. A simulation-based flipped classroom might be an effective teaching approach for developing head and neck examination skills that can be applied at other dental facilities with potentially similar results.

The advent of information technology has paved the way for a new frontier in healthcare known as teledentistry. This innovative approach has revolutionized the delivery of dental care across geographical distances, enhancing accessibility and communication in the realm of oral health. This article aims to highlight the various methodologies of teledentistry, discuss its benefits for both patients and dentists, and emphasize its potential to overcome geographical barriers, enhance access to dental care, and promote oral health equity, especially among children. There are three primary teledentistry methods: real-time consultation, the store-and-forward method, and the remote monitoring method. Real-time consultation facilitates immediate interaction between dentists and patients through video conferencing, enabling the sharing of data and medical history. The store-and-forward method involves the collection and transmission of essential diagnostic materials, enhancing diagnostic accuracy. Remote monitoring allows continuous patient evaluation from a distance, improving healthcare delivery and patient safety. Teledentistry's impact on pediatric and preventive dentistry is substantial. It offers remote counseling, diagnosis, and monitoring for children, especially in areas with limited access to dental care. Additionally, mobile gaming apps play a role in behavioral management and reducing dental anxiety among children. Both patients and dentists benefit from teledentistry. Patients gain access to timely consultations, reducing the need for immediate in-person visits. Dentists can efficiently evaluate and monitor patients, collaborate with specialists, and provide expert advice, leading to improved healthcare delivery. Teledentistry is transforming dental care by overcoming geographical barriers, improving access, and enhancing communication. While facing challenges, its potential to revolutionize healthcare delivery and promote oral health equity is undeniable. With ongoing advancements and strategic measures, teledentistry is poised for a promising future in healthcare.

BACKGROUND: Titanium nanoparticles (NPs) offer promising applications in the treatment and prevention of inflammatory disorders due to their unique physicochemical characteristics. However, additional research is necessary to attain a thorough comprehension and validate the efficacy of this approach in dental practice. OBJECTIVE: This study scrutinizes the anti-inflammatory properties of a dental varnish infused with ginger and rosemary extracts mediated by titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles. METHODS: A herbal dental varnish was formulated by integrating ginger and rosemary extracts with titanium dioxide nanoparticles at concentrations of 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 µL. Anti-inflammatory properties were assessed through Bovine Serum Albumin denaturation and membrane stabilization assays, comparing results with a control group. RESULTS: The results reveal concentration-dependent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in the test group when compared to the control group. The BSA assay corroborates increased percent inhibition with rising titanium dioxide nanoparticle concentrations. In line with existing literature, titanium dioxide nanoparticles enhance dental material properties. CONCLUSION: The bioactive compounds in ginger and rosemary, such as phenolic compounds and terpenes, contribute to anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of the varnish. Additionally, the therapeutic potential of titanium dioxide nanoparticles in addressing inflammatory diseases underscores their significance in this formulation.

OBJECTIVES: The Rocky Mountain Network for Oral Health (RoMoNOH) promotes the delivery of preventive oral health services (POHS) to children receiving care at community health centers (CHCs) in Arizona, Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming. One POHS is oral health goal setting (OHGS). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of OHGS during medical visits on parent/caregiver-reported oral health behaviors (OHBs). METHODS: The RoMoNOH implementation team trained CHC healthcare providers in POHS, including caries risk assessment, oral health education, fluoride varnish application, dental referrals, and parent/caregiver oral health engagement. To promote parents' oral health engagement, healthcare providers were trained in motivational interviewing (MI) with OHGS at medical visits. To evaluate the impact of MI with OHGS on parent/caregiver OHBs, a healthcare team member invited parents/caregivers to complete a baseline survey after their medical visits. The evaluation team sent a follow-up survey after 10-14 days. The surveys measured parents/caregivers' goals, confidence in goal attainment, OHBs, and sociodemographics; the follow-up survey also measured OHGS attainment. Improvement in parent/caregiver-reported OHBs was tested with a paired t-test and unadjusted and adjusted multiple linear regression. RESULTS: In total, 426 parents/caregivers completed the baseline survey; 184 completed both surveys. OHBs, including toothbrushing frequency, stopping bed bottles, drinking tap water, and brushing with fluoride toothpaste improved over the evaluation interval. After adjusting for covariates, brushing with fluoride toothpaste (p = 0.01), drinking tap water (p = 0.03), and removing bed bottles (p = 0.03) improved significantly. CONCLUSION: MI with OHGS with parents/caregivers during medical visits has potential to improve OHBs on behalf of their children.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess whether referral of parents of 6 months old children by a well-child care (WCC) clinic medical practitioner for an early first dental visit combined with the Non Operative Caries Treatment and Prevention (NOCTP) approach in dental practices was effective to maintain oral health in children. METHODS: The study was conducted as a quasi-experimental comparative pre-post trial with a baseline measurement before the intervention. In total 1347 children were allocated at the age of 6 months and 306 children (intervention group: n = 166; care as usual (CAU) group: n = 140) underwent an oral examination at 5 years of age and their parents completed a questionnaire. Nonparametric tests and Hurdle models were used to determine differences in caries experience between the intervention and CAU groups. RESULTS: Children in the intervention group had significantly lower caries experience (d1,2,3 mfs) than children in the CAU group (Median = 2 vs. 5, r = .15, p < .01). Children in the intervention group had significantly fewer inactive caries lesions compared with children in the CAU group (Median = 2 vs. 3, r = .18, p < .001). No differences were found for dentin caries experience and also no differences for active caries lesions. CONCLUSIONS: Referral of parents of newborns for a preventive first dental visit by a WCC medical practitioner combined with NOCTP in dental practices may offer a new opportunity to reduce enamel caries lesions in young children.

BACKGROUND: Various studies show a gap between evidence-based recommendations and the preventive practice of dentists. This study aimed to create and assess an extended Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) model on dentists' intentions to do caries preventive measures and related barriers experienced by dentists. METHODS: A total of 362 general dentists from 34 Indonesian provinces were included in this study. A self-administered online questionnaire consisted of three sections: dentist characteristics and practice pattern, TPB questionnaire, and dentist perceived behavior regarding preventive care for pediatric patients. The questionnaire was distributed and the data was analyzed through structural equation modeling. RESULTS: TPB's extended version is a fit and relevant model, explaining 55.3% of dentists' intentions to undertake preventive procedures and 17.8% of preventive practices. Perceived behavioral control was the most powerful predictor of intention (44.2%) and practice (8.8%), while parental barriers were the most significant barrier to provide preventive care (18.9%). CONCLUSION: Extending the TPB by taking barriers from multiple stakeholders as a consideration has a higher predictive level for preventive practices. Each barrier should be addressed through oral health programs and policies, and dentists must be taught to overcome these barriers (through formal or continuing education) in order to maximize caries prevention strategies.

A Chitosan is a copolymer of N-acetyl-D-glucose amine and D-glucose amine that can be easily produced. It is a polymer that is widely utilized to create nanoparticles (NPs) with specific properties for applications in a wide range of human activities. Chitosan is a substance with excellent prospects due to its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, haemostatic, analgesic, mucoadhesive, and osseointegrative qualities, as well as its superior film-forming capacity. Chitosan nanoparticles (NPs) serve a variety of functions in the pharmaceutical and medical fields, including dentistry. According to recent research, chitosan and its derivatives can be embedded in materials for dental adhesives, barrier membranes, bone replacement, tissue regeneration, and antibacterial agents to improve the management of oral diseases. This narrative review aims to discuss the development of chitosan-containing materials for dental and implant engineering applications, as well as the challenges and future potential. For this purpose, the PubMed database (Medline) was utilised to search for publications published less than 10 years ago. The keywords used were "chitosan coating" and "dentistry". After carefully selecting according to these keywords, 23 articles were studied. The review concluded that chitosan is a biocompatible and bioactive material with many benefits in surgery, restorative dentistry, endodontics, prosthetics, orthodontics, and disinfection. Furthermore, despite the fact that it is a highly significant and promising coating, there is still a demand for various types of coatings. Chitosan is a semi-synthetic polysaccharide that has many medical applications because of its antimicrobial properties. This article aims to review the role of chitosan in dental implantology.

Space is a complex and challenging setting encompassing the region beyond Earth's atmosphere where astronauts and spacecraft operate. The unique conditions of spaceflights, particularly microgravity and radiation, pose significant challenges to astronaut health, including the orofacial region. It has effects on saliva production, microbial composition, and oral hygiene practices, which influence oral health status, such as increased risk of dental caries, gum diseases, oral discomfort, temporomandibular joint dysfunctions, sialoliths, pain and dysesthesia in the teeth and oral mucosa, masticatory muscle atrophy, and oral cancer which can be detrimental during prolonged missions. Hence, a comprehensive approach to dental care in space is imperative to ensure astronauts' well-being and overall health as we strive to extend our presence beyond Earth. This literature review paper sheds light on the intricate effects of space on the orofacial region and delves into the unique challenges astronauts face in upholding optimal oral health while in space. It explores the current state of dentistry in space and discusses advancements and strategies that aim to maintain optimal oral health for astronauts during extended space missions.

OBJECTIVES: The benefits of professional dental treatment for oral diseases have been widely investigated. However, it is unclear whether professional dental treatment provides additional benefits for improving general health. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were obtained from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999 to 2004 and 2011 to 2018 cycles. A total of 36,174 participants were included and followed-up for mortality until December 31, 2019. Dental visit behavior was defined as the time interval of last dental visit (TIDV, < 0.5 year, 0.5-1 year, 1-2 years, 2-5 years, and > 5 years) and the main reasons of the last dental visit (treatment, examination, and other reasons). The Cox proportional risk model was used to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: Compared with participants with time interval of less than 0.5 year, the multivariate-adjusted HRs and 95%CI for participants with time interval of more than 5 years were 1.45 (1.31, 1.61) for all-cause mortality (P trend < 0.0001), 1.49 (1.23, 1.80) for cardiovascular diseases mortality (P trend = 0.0009) and 1.53 (1.29, 1.81) for cancer mortality (P trend = 0.013). Compared with dental visit for examination, participants who had their dental visit for treatment had higher risk for mortality. For participants with dental visit for examination, TIDV of less than 1 year showed lower risk for mortality, whereas TIDV of less than 0.5 year is recommend for population with dental visit for treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Poor dental visit behavior is associated with an increased risk of mortality. Further well-designed studies are needed to confirm the association between professional dental visit and mortality. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This study highlights the potential benefits of regular dental visits in maintaining general health.

Pit and fissure sealants play an essential role in preventive dentistry. This study evaluates the microleakage levels of a new and colored flowable composite applied as a sealant after three preparation techniques. A total of 24 non-carious mandibular permanent molars with deep pits and fissures were included in the study. Pit and fissures were prepared with 37% phosphoric acid, tungsten carbide bur and fissurotomy burs (SS WHITE Dental, New Jersey, USA) using conventional, enameloplasty and fissurotomy techniques. All samples were thermocycled following the placement of Rainbow Flow (PPH CERKAMED Wojciech Pawlowski, Poland) as a sealant and sections were taken after immersion in methylene blue dye. The microleakage levels of the samples were examined under a stereomicroscope (Olympus SZX-7 Olympus SZ-61 Stereo Microscope) at 2.8× magnification to analyze the dye penetration of the flowable composite. The 144 sections were examined and scoring for microleakage was done by examining the dye penetration from the occlusal border to the base of the fissure. Considering all sections regardless of the preparation technique, it was found that 16.6% of the sections have no leakage. Regarding the microleakage scores, the mean score of the conventional group was 1.87 ± 0.98, the mean score of the enameloplasty group was 1.88 ± 1.14, and the mean score of the fissurotomy group was 1.81 ± 1.1. The median scores of the conventional, enameloplasty and fissurotomy groups were 2, 2 and 1.5, respectively. The present study reports no difference between the microleakage level of a colored flowable composite material used as a pit and fissure sealant following three fissure preparation techniques and supports the clinical use of this material.

Aim. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and practices of parents residing in Pakistan toward pits and fissure sealants in children. Materials and Methods. This descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out between November 2022 to March 2023. An online questionnaire was distributed through various social media platforms. Independent t-test and Multiple Linear Regression analysis were performed. Results. A total of 570 participants were recruited. For protection against tooth decay, most of the participants 456(80%) believed that fissure sealants should be placed to protect teeth from decay. Placement of fissure sealants was considered to be a cost-effective measure by majority of the 480 (84.2%) respondents. Conclusion. Fissure sealants are one of the most effective preventive measures against tooth decay. The knowledge, attitude and practice of parents were some being aware of fissure sealants and some were not. It appeared to support the placement of fissure sealants for their children.

In the present study, we investigated commercial dental floss coated with chitosan or chitosan + mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBGNs) in order to determine the antimicrobial and mechanical properties of the newly fabricated flosses. Whereas these coatings showed notable ability to inhibit growth of both Gram (+) and Gram (-) bacteria after 24 h, the impact was negligible at 3 h. Furthermore, the tensile strength of the floss was improved by the addition of these layers, making it more durable and effective for cleaning between teeth. We therefore propose enhanced investigations of these composites since they demonstrate enormous potential in promoting oral health.

Aims: Considering that Cranberry's components might inhibit dentin metalloproteinases exposed to erosive agents, the aim of this study was to evaluate in situeffect of a Cranberry gel application on dentin before an erosive challenge.Materials and methods: This crossover double-blinded study was performed in 2 phases of 5 days each, with 10 healthy volunteers who wore 2 palatal devices (1 for each phase) with 4 dentin specimens (2 specimens for each group). The groups under study were:First Phase: G1 -Erosivechallenge (Coca-cola®) over dentin without any previous treatment (1st negative control group); G2 -Erosive challenge over dentin previously treated with Cranberry gel (test group); and Second Phase: G3 -Erosive challenge over dentin previously treated with a gel without any active principle (2ndnegative control group); G4 -Erosive challenge over dentin previously treated with 0.12% Chlorhexidine gel (positive control group). Each device was immersed into the acid beverage, 3 times daily for 5 minutes during 5 days. Profilometry (µm) was used to quantify the dentin wear. Data were analyzed by Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance followed by Fisher's test (p<0.05).Results: Data (G1: 4.98 ± 1.36a; G2: 3.29 ± 1.16b; G3: 4.38 ± 1.19a; G4: 3.32 ± 1.55b) showed no statistical difference between G1 and G3. There was also no difference between G2 and G4. However, G2 and G4 presented lower wear when compared to G1 and G3, and this difference was statistically significant. Conclusion: The results of this studysuggest a significant efficacy of Cranberry gel in preventing wear of dentin subjected to dental erosion.

INTRODUCTION: Probiotics are living microorganisms that act on the host-microbiome interface to restore the microbiota's physiological homeostasis. Numerous probiotics have been marketed with inhibitory activity against Streptococcus mutans and consequently with a potential anti-caries effect, mainly of the genera Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, whose main disadvantage is their limited ability to settle in the oral cavity. METHODS: This narrative review describes the main Streptococcus spp. with probiotic anti-Streptococcus mutans activity, whose substantivity is greater than that of Lactobacillus spp. and consequently with anti-caries potentiality. We performed a literature review in the PubMed, Science Direct and Google Scholar databases of articles published in English (without time restriction) related to caries and probiotics. RESULTS: The potential identified anti-caries probiotics included Streptococcus spp. A12, Streptococcus oralis (AJ3), Streptococcus oligofermentans, Streptococcus salivarius (K12, M18, JH, LAB813, 24SMB), Streptococcus spp. with arginolytic activity (S. sanguinis, S. gordonii, S. ratti, S. parasanguinis, S. intermedius, S. australis, and S. cristatus), Streptococcus rattus (JH145), Streptococcus dentisani and Streptococcus downii. CONCLUSIONS: The possibility of using these Streptococcus spp. as probiotics that inhibit the growth of dental plaque and the development of carious lesions represents a potential tool of particular interest for individuals with physical or intellectual disabilities that impede the routine and effective application of mechanical dental plaque removal techniques.

BACKGROUND: This pilot study aimed to characterize the experience, satisfaction, and views on feasibility of an oral health primary prevention telehealth service at a public dental hospital's department of pediatric dentistry, from the viewpoint of patients, carers, and clinicians. METHODS: Data were collected using an anonymous questionnaire for parents/guardians, a focus group for clinicians; and were summarized using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, analysis of variance, and by thematic analysis for the qualitative data. RESULTS: Thirty-seven parents/guardians and four clinicians were included. The mean patient age was 5 years (SD = 3.3). Over half of the parents (51.4%) were aged 30-39 years. There was high satisfaction (97.3%) and acceptability (81.1%) of the telehealth service. Native English-speakers were significantly more likely to agree that telehealth was an acceptable mode of preventive care and that they would use it again (p = 0.033). Parents reporting difficulty traveling to dental appointments were significantly more likely to score favorably in categories of usefulness, technical quality, and satisfaction relating to telehealth (all p < 0.001). Important themes from the clinician focus group included specific benefits for patients with special needs or who live rurally, reduced stress on families, and an enhanced focus on prevention. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest ongoing benefits of providing preventive oral health services as an adjunct to face-to-face care, especially to the identified subset of patients who will benefit the most.
